The scheme incorporates 49 dwellings for a new affordable housing scheme at Durham Street, Wigan. The design is based on the simple idea of giving each individual house its own identity and unique environment within a cohesive whole.

The layout was structured using traditional and established spatial archetypes, for example the elegant terraced form, the responsive corner and the square. By arranging these individual set pieces in a sequence we determined an economical sub-division of space, in order to harmoniously achieve a relatively high density using only one and two storey buildings.

Using the site constraints we tempered the layout in a responsive way to derive a finished design unique to the site. We engaged with the topography, public footpaths and surrounding environment in finalising the design.
