The scheme sought to create a ‘no return pier’ with an uninterrupted and multidirectional space. The roof skin is used as a continuation of Yamashita Park. The idea of a fluid and continuous space is compelling. In its execution FOA have achieved, with a simple clarity, an exemplary scheme against a very difficult background and uncertainty over the future of the project.

The building is produced as layering and interweaving of the ground, rather than the development of a conventional physical object. The layering and folds of the various skins allow undulating ramped access throughout the different levels of the building. The timber decking used extensively further emphasises the folding of the surfaces as a series of parallel lines expressing the numerous inflections and directional changes.

Deliberate reductions in the material pallet help to underscore the ‘non building’ characteristics and overall concept.
